Panch Pokhari Trek Overview

A recently established trekking route in Nepal is the Panch Pokhari Trek. Northeast of Kathmandu, at the foot of the Jugal Himal, is Panch Pokhari (4,100 m). The five ponds (Panch Pokhari) in this area are hence regarded as holy ponds. This location also has cultural, religious, and ecological significance. Every year in August, a significant celebration called Janai Purnima takes place here. For the rite of changing the sacred thread (Janai) they wear around their bodies, members of the Brahmin caste travel here.

There are many mysteries and adventures in Panch Pokhari. This is the finest place to discover the geographical terrains, flora and fauna, and mountain panoramas. There are numerous activities available in Panch Pokhari trek.

The Panch Pokhari Trek offers a moderate challenge with steep ascents and descents. The trekking trail takes you through diverse landscapes, including subtropical forests, alpine meadows, and glacial moraines. The highlight of the trek is reaching the five sacred lakes and enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Religious merits: Many pilgrims visit Panch Pokhari to perform religious rituals and earn spiritual merits. The lakes hold great significance for both Hindus and Buddhists, and it is believed that taking a holy dip in these lakes during Janai Purnima cleanses sins and brings good fortune.

Panch Pokhari is not only known for its cultural significance but also for its remarkable biodiversity. The trekking trail takes you through diverse ecosystems, ranging from lush subtropical forests to alpine meadows. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of plant species, including rhododendron forests (especially vibrant during the spring season) and various wildflowers. The region is home to diverse wildlife as well, such as the Himalayan black bear, red panda, musk deer, and various bird species. Exploring this biodiversity-rich area allows you to appreciate the natural wonders of the Himalayas.

The climate in the Panch Pokhari region is influenced by its high altitude and proximity to the Himalayan range. The trek is best undertaken during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is relatively stable and clear, providing excellent visibility of the mountain panoramas. During these seasons, the days are generally mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius (50 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit) at lower elevations. However, as you ascend to higher altitudes, the temperatures drop significantly, and you may experience colder nights and chilly winds. It is important to pack warm clothing and be prepared for changing weather conditions, as the Himalayan climate can be unpredictable.

We arrange accommodation in teahouses or lodges along the trekking route. These basic but cozy accommodations provide a place to rest and rejuvenate after a day of trekking. The rooms typically have twin beds and shared bathrooms. While the facilities may be simple, they offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere amidst the mountains.
