Rara Lake Trek Overview:

Rara Lake is a freshwater lake in Nepal’s far western Karnali Province’s Mugu district. As the deepest lake in Nepal, it is situated at a height of 2,990 meters (9,810 feet) above sea level and has a maximum depth of roughly 167 meters. Also, in terms of volume, it is Nepal’s largest lake. The lake has an area of 10.8 square kilometers (4.2 square miles), is 5.1 kilometers (3.2 miles) long, and 2.7 kilometers (1.7 miles) wide. The stunning Himalayan mountains, some of whose summits reach 4,000 meters (13,120 feet) above sea level, encircle the lake. Alpine woods, lush slopes, and lovely meadows surround the lake, attracting a variety of flora and fauna, including uncommon species of birds and animals.

Rara Lake Trek

Several little streams and rivers feed Rara Lake, and the Nijar River, which is the lake’s primary outflow, eventually merges with the Karnali River. The lake is a significant source of freshwater for the nearby inhabitants, who depend on farming and animal raising for their subsistence. RARA LAKE is still a relatively undiscovered and pristine destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers because of its isolated position and challenging access. Red pandas, musk deer, and black bears are just a few of the many endangered species that call this area home.

It was designated as a Rare National Park. The park offers a number of lovely hiking routes, including the Rara Lake Trek, which leads travelers through some of Nepal’s most breathtaking scenery.

The Rara Lake Trek is a journey that showcases the natural wonders of the region. The trekking trail winds through dense forests, fragrant pine trees, and vibrant rhododendron blooms (during the spring season). Along the way, trekkers are treated to panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and rolling hills. The picturesque landscapes offer endless opportunities for photography and moments of awe-inspired contemplation.

Cultural encounters are also an integral part of the Rara Lake Trek. As trekkers pass through local villages, they have the chance to interact with the hospitable inhabitants and gain insights into their traditional way of life. The region is inhabited by diverse ethnic communities, including Thakuri, Magar, and Brahmin-Chhetri, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. This cultural immersion adds depth and richness to the trekking experience.

Camping by the shores of Rara Lake trek is a highlight of the trek. Setting up camps near the tranquil waters and spending evenings under the starry sky is a truly magical experience. The peaceful ambiance and the reflection of the mountains in the lake create a serene atmosphere that is unmatched.

The Rara Lake Trek is suitable for both experienced trekkers and those seeking an introduction to trekking in Nepal. While the trek poses some challenges due to the remote location and rugged terrain, the rewards are immense. The sense of accomplishment upon reaching the lake and witnessing its pristine beauty is unparalleled.

Overall, the Rara Lake Trek offers a unique opportunity to explore an untouched and scenic corner of Nepal. With its stunning natural beauty, cultural encounters, and sense of adventure, this trek is a must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts seeking an unforgettable Himalayan experience.

Culture of Rara Lake Trek:

Rara Lake Trek

The indigenous Thakuri and Magar people, as well as Tibetan Buddhist traditions, have a strong influence on the culture around the Rara Lake hike in northwest Nepal. Hikers get the chance to fully immerse themselves in the rich cultural history of various ethnic groups as they pass through isolated communities along the trail. Ancient temples, monasteries, and traditional architecture can be found in villages like Jumla and Sinja, which provide insights into the social and spiritual customs of the local populace. Trekkers may come across beautifully carved mani stones with Buddhist mantras engraved on them, as well as vibrant prayer flags flapping in the breeze, signifying prayers for protection, wealth, and peace.

The people of the Rara Lake region are renowned for their warmth and friendliness toward guests, making hospitality a defining feature of their culture. Trekkers can get a genuine look into everyday life in the Himalayas by staying in homestays or basic guesthouses owned and operated by local families. It’s possible to enjoy traditional Nepali food, like dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice) and locally grown veggies, while conversing and interacting with the people over meals. Travelers may also get the chance to see regional celebrations and festivals along the way. These events are important for maintaining and honoring the unique identities of the villages that surround Rara Lake.

FLORA & FAUNA FOUND IN RARA LAKE TREK:

Flora:

Forests of pine, oak, and rhododendrons form a large portion of the landscape in the area surrounding Rara Lake, which is characterized by alpine and sub-alpine vegetation. Together with the variety of wildflowers, visitors can find Himalayan blue poppies, primroses, and iris.

Fauna:

Many rare and endangered kinds of wildlife can be found in the Rara National Park. These are some illustrations of the local fauna:
Red Panda: This little, arboreal creature is one of the park’s top drawcards and is considered endangered.
Musk Deer: These timid creatures are killed for their musk, which is utilized in conventional medicine. Another endangered species is the musk deer.
Snow Leopard: These secretive big cats are considered fragile and are located in the park’s high-altitude sections.
Black Bear: Known for their unique black fur, these bears can be seen all across the park.

RARA LAKE TREK EQUIPMENTS:

Rara Lake Treks

To ensure a safe and comfortable trek, it is necessary to prepare ahead of time and have the appropriate equipment for the isolated region of northwest Nepal, home of Rara Lake. Packing equipment that can withstand a range of weather conditions is crucial because of the trek’s isolated location and fluctuating elevations. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential for negotiating rough and perhaps rainy terrain, while moisture-wicking clothes are necessary for comfort on taxing excursions. Because temperatures can drop dramatically, especially at higher altitudes, layering is essential. Bring thermal underwear, fleece coats, and a down jacket for warmth. To be protected from wind and rain, one needs a high-quality outer shell that is both waterproof and windproof.

Extra cold-weather gear is also a must since lodging in the isolated regions surrounding Rara Lake is sometimes inadequate and nights can be very chilly. A sturdy backpack, trekking poles for balance on unsteady trails, a headlamp with additional batteries, and a reusable water bottle with a purifying system are other essentials. It’s also crucial to include personal essentials like a first aid kit, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and high-energy snacks.

Because of the trek’s remote location, it is advised to bring a portable phone charger, a thorough map, and a compass or GPS device for safety and navigation. By bringing these necessary goods, hikers may make sure they are adequately equipped to tackle the difficulties of the Rara Lake journey and take in the breathtaking scenery of this unspoiled region.

BEST SEASON TO TRAVEL RARA LAKE TREK:

The seasons from September to November and from March to May are ideal for hiking to Rara Lake since they are typically dry and clear. The region sees significant snowfall from December to February, and the monsoon season (June to August) brings significant rains that make navigating the hiking routes challenging.

ALTITUDE SICKNESS IN RARA LAKE TREK:

Rara Lake is located at a high altitude, so anyone hiking there should be mindful of the possibility of getting altitude sickness. Visitors should properly acclimatize by spending a few days at lower altitudes, consuming lots of water, abstaining from alcohol, and quitting smoking in order to prevent altitude sickness. Visitors should promptly descend to lower elevations if they have severe altitude sickness symptoms.

Nepal again and again

March 22, 2017

Nepal again and again

As a Buddhist teacher I organized the 6th India-Nepal tour this year. For the last three trip, I could basically relax and focus on my experties: Buddhism, because all the mundane things where in good hands. Mr Madan Neupane took care of everything: transportation, accommodation, extra activities, even at the border he waited for us with already filled visa application papers. Usually i is a relief to arrive to Nepal, to his care after the crazy things in India. At the las two trip we went to trek with him and his cheerful porters. And we will go again to do more and more. :-)
One thing is very important for me, besides the quality of the service. In Nepal there is not much of a social care. The government does not help those are in need. They have to act themselves. Madan is one of those, who takes care. Let it be some blind man selling incense on the streets, or a semi-illiterate street vendor of music instruments, they are always welcomed and helped by him. Also some handicapped people producing slippers could sell their products through him. And after the earthquake, when he had to live in a tent with his family, he did not ask for donation, but work.
So my conclusion: if I can choose who to contribute, then without hesitation I vote for him. Quality and humanity.
Thank you
