Best Time to Trek Makalu Base Camp

The Best Time for Makalu Trek is during the spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) seasons when the weather is stable, the mountain views are at their finest, and vibrant landscapes—ideal for high-altitude trekking. Trekking during winter or monsoon can be challenging due to extreme weather conditions.

Makalu Base Camp Trek | Stunning View from Langmale Kharka

🌸 Spring (March to May)

Highlights: Blooming rhododendrons, warmer temperatures, and clear views of Everest, Makalu, and Baruntse.

Temperature: Daytime ranges from 10°C to 20°C at lower altitudes; colder at higher camps.

Why Go: Wildlife is more active, and trails are filled with blossoming flowers and greenery.

🍁 Autumn (September to November)

Highlights: Crisp skies, excellent visibility, post-monsoon freshness.

Temperature: Cool and pleasant during the day, colder at night, especially above 4,000m.

Why Go: This is the most popular season for trekking in Nepal due to perfect weather conditions.

🌧️Monsoon & ❄️Winter

Monsoon (June to August) Not Recommended: Trails can be slippery, landslides are common, and views are often blocked by clouds and rain. Leeches are also an issue in lower altitudes.

Winter (December to February) Possible but Challenging: Only recommended for experienced trekkers. High passes and lodges might be closed due to heavy snow. Expect very cold nights and potential delays.

Difficulty & Altitude Information

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is considered a challenging and remote trek, best suited for experienced trekkers or adventurous beginners who are physically fit and mentally prepared.

Trek Difficulty: Challenging

  • Trek Duration: 17 days (including travel and acclimatization)
  • Trek Type: Teahouse & camping mix (basic lodges available in some villages, camping in more remote sections)
  • Daily Walk: 5 to 8 hours
