North Annapurna Base Camp Trek – A Trending Adventure in Annapurna Region.

The North Annapurna Base Camp Trek is a perfect adventure for trekkers who crave remote, off-the-grid experiences in the majestic Himalayas. This trail leads to the lesser-explored northern side of Annapurna I, offering raw natural beauty, cultural richness, and a connection to one of the most historic mountaineering feats in history. Before 1950, no human had ever stood on a peak over 8000 meters. That changed on June 3, 1950, when French mountaineers Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal became the first to summit Annapurna I (8091 m) without the aid of supplemental oxygen. Their team initially considered both Dhaulagiri (8167 m) and Annapurna I, but after evaluating the risks, they pursued Annapurna via its North Face.

North Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Their descent, however, turned into a life-threatening ordeal filled with snowstorms and avalanches. Despite these hardships, they made it back to camp, forever writing their names in mountaineering history. Annapurna remained untouched until 1970, when a British Army team retraced the same North Face route to the summit. Today, very few trekkers explore this rugged trail, making it a perfect option for those seeking solitude, adventure, and untamed Himalayan scenery.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Tatopani. The trek then follows the historic Maurice Herzog trail. On the first day, you reach Narchayng village; on the second, Chhotema. From there, the trail continues through serene forests, alpine meadows, and remote valleys, passing through places like Kalokhola, Phulbari, and the pastures near base camp. By the ninth day, you’ll stand at the North Base Camp of Annapurna I, gazing at its colossal ice-covered face. The return journey takes about three to four days, typically via the picturesque Lete village in Mustang.

This trek is physically demanding and requires good preparation, especially since the route has no permanent lodges or hotels yet. Trekkers must rely on camping, adding to the raw and immersive experience. Touch The Himalaya Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd offers an excellent, well-designed itinerary for this exceptional trek, ensuring both safety and a deeply rewarding experience. With professional guides, experienced Sherpas, and complete logistical support, they lead you through the same historic route used by the French team in 1950.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of towering peaks including Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna South. Cultural encounters with local Gurung communities and natural hot springs add even more depth to the journey. With minimal crowds and untouched surroundings, this trail is also ideal for photography and nature filming. For those who are physically prepared and mentally ready to take on a real Himalayan adventure, the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek offers something truly unforgettable. Let Touch the Himalaya guide you through this remarkable journey, blending history, nature, and challenge into a once-in-a-lifetime trekking experience.

Accommodation During the Trek

Along the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek, a variety of accommodation options are available, including tea houses, camping setups, and homestays.

Tea Houses: Most commonly found in the lower to mid-altitude areas of the trek, tea houses are simple, family-run lodges offering basic facilities. They usually provide a bed, meals (breakfast and lunch), and occasionally hot water for showers. Staying in tea houses allows trekkers to engage with local families and gain insight into their daily lives and culture.

Camping: As the trail ascends past Bhusket Mela toward the North Annapurna Base Camp, the number of tea houses decreases significantly. In these higher and more remote sections, trekkers typically switch to camping. Mountaineering companies organize complete camping setups, including tents, sleeping bags, and meals prepared by a support team. Camping at high altitudes offers an authentic Himalayan experience peaceful nights under starlit skies and a true sense of isolation from modern civilization.

A dedicated kitchen team, including cooks and helpers, accompanies campers throughout the trek to ensure nutritious and satisfying meals are prepared daily.

Homestays: In some villages like Hum Khola, Shadikharka, and Narchang, homestay options are available. These offer a chance to live with local families, experience their hospitality, and gain a deeper understanding of rural mountain life. Homestays also contribute positively to the local economy through cultural exchange and tourism.

Meals during the trek

In Kathmandu, your hotel stay includes breakfast. However, during the trek, all meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided. The local diet in these mountain regions mainly consists of potatoes, oats, buckwheat, Sherpa stew, and Tibetan bread. As you go higher in altitude, food options become more limited, so you can expect to eat a lot of potato-based meals. Potatoes are rich in carbohydrates, making them a great energy source something that’s especially important in high-altitude environments.
