Shey-phoksundo Lake during Winter

Shey-Phoksundo Lake Trek lies in Shey-Phoksundo National Park, located in the remote Trans-Himalayan region of northwestern Nepal, is the country’s largest national park, spanning an impressive 3,555 square kilometers. Established in 1984, the park was created to protect the distinctive Trans-Himalayan ecosystem, home to a wide range of flora and fauna. The park’s varying altitudes, climatic zones, and zoo-geographical regions contribute to its remarkable ecological diversity.

In 1998, a 1,349 square kilometer area surrounding the park was designated as a buffer zone. This area includes both forest and privately owned land and is jointly managed by the park authorities and local communities. The collaborative management approach focuses on conserving natural and cultural heritage while promoting community development.

One of the main attractions of Shey Phoksundo National Park is the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek, which is the a journey into one of Nepal’s most untouched and isolated regions. The trek is renowned for its breathtaking natural scenery and cultural richness. The turquoise waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake, situated at an elevation of 3,611 meters (11,849 feet), form the heart of this adventure. Located in the Dolpo region, the lake is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and ancient monasteries, offering both spiritual and scenic rewards.

The trek begins with a flight to Nepalgunj, followed by another short flight to Juphal, the starting point of the trek. From here, you enter Shey-Phoksundo National Park and begin Shey-Phoksundo Lake Trek, your journey through some of Nepal’s most pristine landscapes. The trail, while moderately challenging for fit trekkers, offers an enriching experience for seasoned adventurers seeking solitude and natural beauty.

Named after the stunning turquoise lake, the park is dedicated to preserving the unique Himalayan ecosystem and is home to rare and endangered species. Being a restricted region, access is limited, helping maintain its untouched charm. As you trek through the heart of the majestic Himalayas in western Nepal, you’ll be surrounded by snow-capped peaks and dramatic landscapes. Along the way, you’ll explore traditional villages like Ringmo, where Tibetan and Nepalese cultures blend in fascinating ways. Opened to foreign visitors only in 1990, the Phoksundo Lake area remains tranquil and relatively undiscovered.

Touch the Himalya Treks and Expedition is currently offering exclusive group discounts for Phoksundo Lake Trek departures in 2025 and 2026. Groups with over 10 participants qualify for our special group pricing. Additionally, early bird and festive season discounts are available for individual trekkers and smaller groups. However, our all-inclusive Shey-Phoksundo Lake Trek package takes care of every essential aspect of your journey from transportation to experienced guides and porters. With us, you can enjoy a smooth and secure trekking experience, especially important in such isolated and restricted terrain.

Itinerary of Shey-Phoksundo Lake Trek

Day 2: Fly to Nepalgunj
Take a short flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a warm and bustling city in western Nepal near the Indian border. Located at low altitude, Nepalgunj contrasts sharply with the cooler mountain regions you’ll soon explore. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and take time to relax or explore local markets and temples. This overnight stop is necessary due to the limited flight schedule to Juphal, the gateway to Dolpo. The evening is usually spent preparing for the early mountain flight the next day. Expect hot, humid weather and a blend of Nepali and Indian culture.
Day 3: Fly to Juphal then trek to Dunai
Take a scenic early morning flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal (2,320m), the gateway to Dolpo. From Juphal, begin your trek with a gradual descent through terraced fields and small villages. The trail follows the Bheri River, offering a gentle introduction to trekking in this remote region. After about 2–3 hours of walking, arrive at Dunai (2,140m), the district headquarters of Dolpa. Dunai is a modest town with basic facilities and serves as a hub for trekkers. Overnight stay here allows you to acclimatize and prepare for the more remote days ahead.
Day 4: Trek to Chhepka
Leave Dunai and enter the Shey Phoksundo National Park. The trail leads through lush pine forests, riverside paths, and small Magar villages. Enjoy scenic views of cliffs and waterfalls along the Suligad River. After 6–7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Chhepka (2,670m), a peaceful village nestled in a forested valley. The trail is rich in biodiversity, and you may spot langurs, birds, and unique plant species. This part of the trek introduces you to the natural beauty and isolation of Dolpo. Overnight at a local teahouse or camp in Chhepka.
Day 5: Trek to Jarana Hotel
Today’s trek continues along the Suligad River through beautiful alpine landscapes. The path climbs gradually through forests of fir, birch, and bamboo. Pass through Rechi and other small settlements before reaching your stop near a simple lodge known as “Jarana Hotel” (approx. 3,375m). This is a basic rest point used by trekkers on the way to Phoksundo Lake. The day offers excellent photo opportunities with crystal-clear rivers, dramatic rock formations, and glimpses of high ridges. Expect 6–7 hours of walking, and enjoy the tranquility of this remote Himalayan trail.
Day 6: Trek to Ringmo Phoksundo Lake
Today is a highlight of the trek as you reach the stunning Phoksundo Lake. The trail climbs steeply to a viewpoint offering breathtaking first glimpses of the turquoise lake. After a short descent, arrive at Ringmo village (3,610m), located beside Shey Phoksundo Lake. This traditional Bon village offers insights into local Tibetan-influenced culture. The lake, one of Nepal’s deepest and most beautiful, is surrounded by rocky cliffs and pine forests. The trek takes around 5–6 hours. Spend the evening by the lake, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere and mountain scenery.
Day 7: Explore Shey-Phoksundo Lake and Tshowa Gompa
Spend the day exploring the serene Shey-Phoksundo Lake and its surroundings. Visit the ancient Tshowa (or Thasung) Gompa, a 900-year-old Bon monastery perched on a ridge above the lake. Learn about the unique Bon religion, which predates Buddhism. Walk along the lakeshore trails and enjoy panoramic views of turquoise waters, snowy peaks, and dramatic cliffs. This rest day helps with acclimatization and allows for cultural immersion in Ringmo village. It’s also a perfect opportunity to relax, journal, or take photographs of one of Nepal’s most magical high-altitude lakes.
Day 8: Trek back to Chhepka
Begin your return trek from Ringmo to Chhepka, retracing the scenic trail through pine and cedar forests. The descent is easier but still requires care on rocky paths. Enjoy a different perspective of the landscape as you pass waterfalls, cliffs, and suspension bridges. You’ll cross familiar villages and may spot wildlife like musk deer or Himalayan birds along the way. After 6–7 hours of trekking, arrive back at Chhepka for an overnight stay. This day is a good chance to reflect on your journey and revisit the natural beauty you passed earlier.
Day 9: Trek to Juphal
The final trekking day takes you from Chhepka back to Juphal via Dunai. The trail follows the Bheri River, passing terraced fields and small villages. You’ll return through Dunai, where you may stop briefly before continuing the final ascent to Juphal (2,320m). Expect 6–7 hours of walking, mostly on familiar terrain. Once in Juphal, celebrate completing the trek with your guide and crew. This small mountain town offers views of distant peaks and local culture. Overnight at a guesthouse or lodge in preparation for your flight to Kathmandu.
Day 10: Fly to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj
Take an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj, and then connect on a domestic flight back to Kathmandu. Enjoy views of the Himalayas from the air as you return to the capital. Once in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel and relax after days of trekking. You may spend the afternoon shopping, visiting nearby temples, or enjoying a farewell dinner. This marks the end of your Dolpo adventure, rich with mountain landscapes, cultural encounters, and serene wilderness. Overnight in Kathmandu, or prepare for your international departure.
